We know that family is an important part of the college journey. We encourage family members to connect with our team, learn more about University of Michigan support programs, and give your student the tools they need to succeed.
Foster independent decision-making.
Your student has a variety of choices ahead of them that will help forge their path at the university. Foster a sense of independent decision-making by encouraging them to take responsibility for making informed decisions about their college journey.
Support self-advocacy.
Your student is the expert on themselves, and we want to hear from them during their time at Michigan. Support their ability to recognize what they need to be successful and to communicate those needs to the campus community.
Recommend connecting with campus resources.
Your student has access to a wide breadth of resources on campus to support all aspects of the academic, professional, social, and personal well-being. Encouraging your student to connect with campus resources is an excellent step to creating a better sense of belonging.
Encourage involvement outside of the classroom.
Your student will have the opportunity to engage in clubs, organizations, research, performance, and so much more at Michigan. Balancing academics and life outside of the classroom is essential to a well-rounded college experience.
Normalize help-seeking behaviors.
Your student may need to reach out for help, some for the first time in their academic career. Remind them that asking for help is a normal part of being at a place as large as Michigan, and the dedicated members of the campus community are here to support them every step of the way.
